For more than 25 years, I have worked across business development, project and program leadership, and systems implementation. I like taking a complex goal, finding the structure inside it, and building something people can actually use.

A system someone else could run.

Around 1995, I worked in the front office of a chemical fertilizer dealer. We needed to track reusable tanks called shuttles: who had each one, and whether it had come back.

The process used a carbon-copy form book and manual logging in a Macintosh word-processing document. While taking a Microsoft Access class, I convinced the office to let me build a database for the work I was doing every day.

I designed, built, tested, implemented, and used it. As I worked, I learned to create the queries and views we needed for reporting, and an input form so entering information did not mean working in a table. I made it easy enough to hand off to another receptionist.

That is the kind of systems work I still care about: understand the problem, make the information useful, and build something another person can operate.

Then the work became personal.

Years later, the systems that had worked for my own life stopped fitting. My capacity was less predictable. Too much still depended on me remembering, carrying, and pushing harder when something slipped.

So I started rebuilding. The same questions applied: What is actually happening? What needs a decision? What support will work on an ordinary Tuesday?

The 4 Moves give the work a useful structure: Surface what is real. Shape what supports you. Practice it in real life. Tune it from evidence.

In a project, that can mean making the work visible, clarifying decisions and ownership, carrying out a clear handoff, and adjusting from what actually happened. These are moves you return to as needed.

AI earns its place when it has a bounded job: organizing supplied information, helping you consider options, or preparing something you can check. You still decide what is true, what matters, and what to do.

Systems can help. The judgment stays yours. That’s the deliberate part.
